B.R.I.D.G.E.S. LLC

(Building Respect for Identities, Diverse Gender Expressions, and Sexualities)

Buidling Respect for Identities, Diverse Gender Expressions and Sexualities (BRIDGES) is the first Living Learning Community focused upon the awareness, exploration, respect, and study of all sexual orientations and gender identities as they are socially, academically, and personally constructed and developed in both the commonwealth of Virginia and the South.

Do I have to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Questioning in order to participate in the BRIDGES program?

No, any individual regardless of the sexual orientation, gender identification, or gender expression may participate in the BRIDGES program. This LLC is available for incoming 1st year students and upper class students.

What can I expect out of BRIDGES?

Residents of the community will live on the same floor throughout the year, enroll in shared academic courses during their Fall and Spring semesters, and forge invaluable bonds of community facilitated by trained faculty advisors and peer mentors. Additionally, students enrolled in the program will participate in campus activities, academic seminars, community service projects, and floor events, which engage themselves with one another and the greater Mason community in a safe and intentional manner.

Will I be safe living on the BRIDGES floor?

Yes. Students enrolled in BRIDGES will experience the same security measures offered to other Living Learning Communities. However, given the sensitive nature of those discussed by BRIDGES residents, Faculty Mentors, Peer Advisors, and Resident Advisors will be aptly educated in and made aware of LGBTQ student needs.

Will BRIDGES be safe for Trans needs?

Yes. All students in the BRIDGES program will participate in Safe Zone sessions which educate all members of the BRIDGES community of the needs of Transgender identified individuals. Additonally, all bathroom facilities will be marked "Female-Identified" and "Male-Identified," single rooms may be allotted to those students presenting a specific need for such a space.

Do I have to be OUT to participate in BRIDGES?

No. Students may affirm their identities, expressions, and sexualities in any way they may choose. Residency on the floor and participation in the BRIDGES program do not assume an inidivudal or groups sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Who can I speak to about any additional questions or concerns I have about BRIDGES?
