LGBTQ+ Resources, George Mason University
Welcome to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, & Questioning (LGBTQ+) Resources in the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment (CCEE) at George Mason University. Starting in 2002, LGBTQ+ Resources has worked for and with the LGBTQ+ and ally communities at George Mason’s campuses to create an environment that is welcoming and conducive to learning. Our Mission: LGBTQ+ Resources works to promote the academic success, health, and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) students and their allies. We work to sustain and strengthen a campus climate of safety, equity, inclusion, and respect in which LGBTQ and ally students can succeed and thrive at Mason. We are also excited to tell you about our newest program, starting in Fall 2020, the LGBTQ+ Mentoring Program!
LGBTQ+ Resources Fall 2020 UPDATE
Dear students, colleagues, and friends,
In accordance with university and state guidelines and to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community, Fall 2020 will be a bit different than a usual semester.
We are still available to you as a resource in this uncertain time. Our team will be available Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm virtually via email (lgbtq@gmu.edu) and our new chat feature (details coming soon). Additionally, you are able to schedule a virtual appointment through either method to meet with a staff member one-on-one.
Our office suite will be available for students who are interested in utilizing the Trans Community Closet and our limited free printing. Due to space restrictions, only 3 people will be able to be in the space including staff, so only those using these resources will be able to enter the space. The office suite will be available Tuesday & Thursday 10:00am-3:00pm.
Please reach out if you need anything. Let’s keep the most marginalized in our communities in mind as we continue to support one another through physical distancing, wearing a mask, and taking care of yourselves.
With love,
The LGBTQ+ Resources team

GENDER INCLUSIVE RESTROOMS AT MASON
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) Campus Climate Task Force, established in Spring 2011 by University Life and supported by the Provost’s Office and Mason administration, spent 18 months reviewing the issues and concerns across the university for students who are part of the LGBTQ community. One of the projects this task force undertook was locating the gender inclusive bathrooms at Mason. The LGBTQ Campus Climate Task Force created a list of these bathrooms in order to make these facilities more visible to faculty, staff and students.
We are currently refining our list of single stall user locking restrooms that includes all of Mason’s Virginia campuses to work with facilities and signage folks to advocate for the all gender restroom signage pictured here (consistent with current transgender and nonbinary inclusive best practices), but in the meantime, we have checked the Fairfax campus Unisex Restrooms (these restrooms may be labeled Unisex in a variety of ways– including being gendered as both male and female or the half person from a couple years ago), here is a current listing.
CAMPUS PRIDE INDEX
George Mason University has been ranked 3.5 out of 5 stars on the Campus Pride LGBTQ Campus Climate Index! We are among the top of the Virginia schools and aim to improve our ranking in the next year.
